Knox Box (IFC Section 506, Key Boxes)

A Knox Box (key box) is required if your commercial facility meets any of these requriements:

  1. The building has a fire sprinkler system
  2. The building has an automatic or monitored fire alarm system
  3. The building has an elevator traveling over two (2) floors
  4. Locked security gates that cross fire lanes
  5. The building has burglar bars

All commercial occupancies are encouraged to obtain and install Knox Boxes or Padlocks to allow rapid access to their facilities during an emergency response.

A residential box is available for residents who are handicapped or may need to be assisted by the fire department in the event of a fall or other emergency. This would allow the EMS crews to gain access to the house and assist the person there without damaging the door upon entry.

You can obtain information about ordering a knox box lock by visiting the Knox Box Company online. Or you can pick up an order form fr om Fire Administration located @ 200 S Center St.
